Between the plains (Gabi app art) by Srarlight Between the plains (Gabi app art) by Srarlight
For the group :iconpmd-explorers:

Alright so If you're following my pmd-e blog on tumblr you might already know what this is for.

I've been working hard to improve my art for awhile now by practicing everyday whether it be a doodle or otherwise and since my school has been riling us juniors up to get us to prepare for college and because I want to get into a nice art school, I want to do just that by focusing on areas I need to improve with my art now and then trying to get better at them before I attempt to build a nice portfolio. I made this picture of Gabi so I could see what I can really do when I'm giving something my 110% effort.

I want to ask if some of you out there can give me a nice critique involving this piece or others (even though my recent art hasn't been it's best) so I can see where I stand! This would help me immensely and I would appreciate it so much if you could help me out by writing a few words with any problems that stick out to you.
One little note here: I wanted this pic to replace the current one on the app so I didn't want to have a weird perspective obscuring her appearance so she's pretty much standing dead on so it's still clear on what she looks like

2 recommendations, the palette is good, but its too narrow, the blue and the purple look nice, but its too harmonious, especially with such a dynamic picture. Also because of this the yellow stands out way too much. Second, the shadows, while well done are a bit too faint, with so much light going around with the ability, you'd expect a more dynamic light source/result, or whatever you call it. Other than that, the piece is very good though, dynamic pose, rendered excellently and the background looks lovely. I hope these pointers help you get some extra UMPH out of your image. Feel free to ask me more if you want me to elaborate on something further. As for the stars, pay them little mind, I just went with my first instinct, I'm not overly fond of them.

It's always nice to see artists like you who strive to be the best they can be.
I do see some points that you might want to work with but you know, you'll improve in time.

Ahh thanks! I've been working hard on improving for awhile but there is always room for improvement so I don't see myself quitting anytime soon :D

Ah, you should really listen to =dearnightmare about the color palette. It's good but some yellows are out of place and they tend to steal the viewers' focus on Gabi. Remember that yellow attracts attention and are very visible (that's why we have lots of yellow road and caution signs). And here's a tutorial that I like about lineart if you want to know more about them: [link].

Hope that'll help and do your best!

(Oh btw, I study Fine Arts and I suggest you should try realism as well. In our Talent Test entrance exam, they made us draw and render our non-dominant hand.)

Ohh all of this is very nice thanks for bringing this to my attention!

(Hah sure thing! I do most of the realism in my high school art class but it would definitely do me good to get more practice in on my own time! Thanks for all the tips! :D)
